Has Your Box Gutter Reached the End of Its Life?

A box gutter sits inside the roofline, between two roofs or behind a parapet wall, rather than hanging off the edge. That keeps it out of sight, but it also means that when one rusts through or overflows, the water often ends up in the ceiling or down an inside wall.

Old box gutters can corrode along the bottom and leak at the joins, and a rainhead that is too small or damaged can't take the water away fast enough. New homes and extensions with parapets or flat roof sections need them installed with the same care from the start.

Box Gutters That Carry Water Out of Your Roof

A well-made box gutter collects the water from the roof and carries it to a rainhead or outlet on the outside of the building, where it drops into the downpipe. We install and replace box gutters and rainheads with neatly folded corners, sealed joins and outlets set where the water runs.

It's detailed roof plumbing, and our more than 15 years in the industry show in the parts you'll never see once the roof is finished. On new builds and extensions we work from the plans you have, and on existing homes we replace the old box gutter and rainhead so they drain freely again.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A box gutter is a gutter built into the roof rather than hung off its edge. You'll usually find one between two roof sections or behind a parapet wall, carrying water to a rainhead or outlet on the outside of the building.

  • A rainhead is the box on the outside of the wall that collects water from a box gutter and feeds it into the downpipe. It also gives water somewhere to spill outside the building if the downpipe can't keep up.

  • It depends on the length and width of the box gutter, how many rainheads or outlets it has, how easy it is to reach and how much of the surrounding roof needs to be lifted. We quote every job individually, so contact us for a free quote.

  • Yes. We install box gutters and rainheads on new homes and extensions as well as replacing them on existing houses. If your plans already show the box gutter and rainhead details, send them through when you ask for a quote.

  • Get it looked at soon, because water from a box gutter goes into the house rather than over the edge. The cause could be the box gutter, the rainhead or a nearby flashing, so see our Roof Leak Repairs page or contact us for a quote.

  • We are based in Reservoir and install and replace box gutters and rainheads across Melbourne's northern and north-eastern suburbs. See our Areas We Serve page for the full list.
